Download or delete your data

Export your data by email, remove a kid with 30 days to restore, delete your grown-up account, or delete the household: export first, purge after 30 days.

Last updated 6 Oct 2026

This is for the grown-up who wants a copy of the family’s data, needs to remove a kid, wants to delete their own account, or is closing the household down for good. Everything here is done inside the app; if you can no longer sign in, see the last section.

Download your data

To get a copy of everything CubbyJar holds for your family:

  1. Go to More.
  2. Tap “Export your data”.
  3. Tap “Send the export”.

A banner confirms that a link to the export has been emailed to you. The file is JSON. The link goes only to the grown-up who asked for it, works for 7 days, and the file itself is deleted after 30 days. On a computer, Settings sits in the sidebar instead of More.

What the file contains

The export is one JSON file with "schemaVersion": 2. It holds the household (name, time zone, currency, family code), every grown-up and kid (names, the grown-ups’ email addresses, the kids’ usernames and birth years), and every record the household keeps: accounts and goals, categories and groups, transactions with their split lines, transfers, recurring items, budgets, paydays and their lines, chores and each day’s chore status, kids’ requests, interest credits, statement imports with their rows, categorization rules and notification settings. It also lists the household’s devices (platform, last seen) and an activity log of what changed and when, without the before and after details. Amounts are written as text, like "12.34", in the household’s currency.

It never contains passwords, PINs, sign-in tokens, push tokens, copies of emails, or the raw statement files you uploaded.

Remove a kid

To remove a kid:

  1. Go to More, then “Manage family”.
  2. Under Kids, tap “Remove” on the kid’s row.
  3. Confirm “Remove {name} from the family?” with “Yes, remove from family”.

They are signed out everywhere, and their jars keep their full history. For 30 days, “Show removed kids” lists them with a “Restore” button. On a computer, Family sits in the sidebar instead of More.

Delete your account

A grown-up can delete their own account while the household carries on with the other grown-ups:

  1. Go to More, then “Manage family” (on a computer, Family in the sidebar).
  2. Tap “Delete my account”.
  3. Enter your password and confirm with “Delete my account”.

Your sign-in, your devices and your settings are removed right away and cannot be restored. The household and everything it recorded stay with the other grown-ups, and the entries you made show as Former adult. If you are the only grown-up, the app asks you to invite another grown-up first or to delete the household instead, because a household cannot be left with no grown-up.

Delete your household

On the “Family” screen (More › “Manage family” on a phone, Family in the sidebar on a computer), the “Danger zone” section sits at the bottom on a phone and in the right-hand column on a computer, always visible. Tap “Delete this family”, type the family name to confirm, and tap “Yes, delete this family”. The warning above the field spells it out: an export is emailed first, and the family is deleted in 30 days unless you cancel before then. Every grown-up gets the notice. Until that date the screen reads “This family is scheduled for deletion on {date}.” and the family is read-only, apart from “Cancel deletion” and asking for another export.

If you can no longer sign in

If you have lost access to the app or to your sign-in, email privacy@cubbyjar.com from the email address on your account and say whether you want your grown-up account or the whole household deleted. We confirm the request with you by email and carry out the same deletion the app would: a grown-up account is removed right away; a household is exported to you first and purged 30 days later.

Backups

Backups are kept for 30 days, so anything deleted also clears out of them within 30 days of the purge. See the privacy policy for the rest of how CubbyJar handles your data.
